Nah, I would argue that considering that the elytra is an endgame item, only obtained after visiting the end, minecarts are a great form of travel early game, especcially considering how easy it is to make an iron farm pretty much the moment you spawn in.

If you already have a village you probably have silk touch already so make an ice boat highway it is far faster
