there are two types of attacking moves. physical, and special. physical moves are ones that make contact with the opponent, like drain punch or iron tail. special moves are ones that dont make contact with the opponent, like bubble or charge beam. if a pokemon has a high attack stat but a low special attack stat, special moves will be weaker than physical. same applies for defense.
