There's a difference between adding things to characters for no reason and changing something to keep it fresh. This show has change a lot about all the characters, personality and appearance wise. If she was black but the same character this argument would work, but they've mixed up her personality as well. That's the case for all the characters in this show, they were changed so they could do something new with the characters instead of the same thing it's been for years.
